Dr. Rohan W. Perera, PhD, PE provides expertise in the area of pavement evaluation and design in SME’s Pavement Group. He is involved with design of new pavement systems, evaluation of existing pavement systems, development of maintenance and rehabilitation strategies for pavements, and performing research related to pavements. He also develops pavement management systems, analyzes data from inertial profilers, evaluates and analyzes pavements using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data, and is an expert in statistical analysis of data. Rohan has conducted numerous research projects related to pavement smoothness funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and is a recognized expert in the field of pavement smoothness. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio and joined SME in 1991 after obtaining his PhD in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University.

Rohan has a keen interest in all projects that he works on and strives to provide solutions that can be easily implemented. He endeavors to stay abreast of the latest developments occurring in the pavement field and how they can be applied to provide improved solutions to problems facing SME’s clients by attending conferences and reading research reports and other publications. He has presented papers at numerous conferences and published many papers in professional journals. Many reports prepared by him on various research projects are available on the web and many researchers from United States and overseas have made references to his work.

Rohan has served on two committees of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) since 2006 including the Strength and Deformation Characteristics of Pavement Systems and Surface Properties – Vehicle Interaction. Rohan has been actively involved with the Road Profiler User Group (RPUG) having participated in more than 20 annual meetings of this group and making presentations at most meetings he attended. Over the past nine years he has been coordinating the upgrade of the four American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards related to pavement smoothness under a contract with the FHWA.
