Stephen P. Zins is a Licensed Professional Geologist (LPG) with 24 years of environmental consulting experience including environmental site assessments (ESAs), subsurface investigations, and remediation of environmental contamination. As a Senior Project Consultant in SME’s Indianapolis office, he interfaces with clients to manage a variety of projects including ESAs, underground storage tank (UST) closures and assessments, soil and groundwater remediation systems, and hazardous building materials assessment and abatement. Stephen is a licensed Asbestos Inspector in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, as well as an Asbestos Management Planner in Indiana and Ohio. He holds an MS degree in Environmental Geology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, a BS degree in Geology from Ball State University, and an A.S. degree in CADD from Vincennes University.

Joining SME in 2016, Stephen assists our Environmental Group with identifying, securing and managing opportunities within Indiana, as well as other markets, to grow our service offerings. He has developed a thorough knowledge of standards of practice, regulatory policy, and environmental regulations. Stephen has managed numerous soil and groundwater investigations including construction, installation, and operation and maintenance of various soil and groundwater remediation systems such as electrical resistivity heating (ERH), bio-injections, permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), etc. He has also managed numerous UST removals throughout Indiana leading to successful closure. In addition, he has conducted more than 100 ESAs for property transfer and due diligence purposes. His asbestos experience includes inspections and management planning for industrial and commercial facilities throughout the Midwest.

When it’s time to relax, Stephen enjoys spending time with his family, outdoor activities, coaching YMCA kid’s sports, participating in leadership roles for Cub Scouts and Boys Scouts of America as well as assisting at the St Vincent De Paul food pantry.
