Joel Hecker is a Project Geologist in SME’s Cincinnati, Ohio office. He holds a BS degree in Geology, and a MS degree in Hydrogeology. He is a Licensed Professional Geologist in Indiana, South Carolina, and Oregon. As a member of SME’s Environmental Services Group, he tackles a variety of projects including environmental due diligence, site assessments for brownfield redevelopment support, and underground storage tank (UST) closures and assessments. Joel strives to be his client’s first and only stop for environmental help, and because of his strong knowledge of SME’s diverse technical service areas, he can be a great resource for challenges beyond environmental, such as issues with building materials, constructability, and pavements. Due to his involvement in projects throughout SME’s geographic footprint, Joel is well versed in the environmental regulations and laws of a variety of states.

Joel has significant field experience with soil, groundwater, and soil gas sampling; monitoring well installation; environmental drilling methods; and contractor oversight. He has provided technical assistance on complex site characterization and remediation project issues, including contaminated soil and groundwater management, nonaqueous-phase liquid (NAPL) recovery, chemical vapor mitigation in buildings, and hazardous and non-hazardous waste characterization and disposal. He is also proficient in determining aquifer characteristics and developing groundwater flow models and conceptual site models.

The majority of Joel’s work is with local communities. He has been very successful in working with communities to acquire grant funding from a variety of sources to cover the cost of environmental assessment or cleanup projects. Joel is grateful for the opportunity to see communities be positively impacted by his work, from seeing abandoned and dilapidated industrial sites returned to productive use as parks, residences, or businesses.

Joel has always taken pride in his ability to get things done in a quality manner and within tight deadlines, as clients always need things done quickly. He can be counted on to get a project out the door or problems solved in the timeframe needed by the client. Joel has a knack for assessing and responding to clients’ needs, and he proactively builds and maintains strong client and community relationships.

Away from the office, Joel spends time with his wife, being as active as possible and exploring as many places off the beaten path as they can.
