Double Tree Resort in Bay City, Michigan
Several SME team members presented technical sessions at the 2015 Michigan Bridge Conference Workshop on March 17, 2015 at the Double Tree Resort in Bay City, Michigan. The workshop, titled Geotechnical Considerations for Bridge Foundation Design and Construction, provided younger geotechnical engineers, bridge designers and bridge owners a deeper understanding of geotechnical engineering techniques used during the geotechnical evaluation and design process for bridges, with the goal of improved bridge design team interactions. The following SME team members presented:

Christopher R. Byrum, PhD, PE presented “Geotechnical Engineering and Michigan Geology,” “Geosynthetics and Lightweight Fills for Bridge Abutments and Approaches,” and “FHWA’s Geotechtools.”

Christopher R. Byrum, PhD, PE teamed with Douglas Parmerlee, PE, and (AECOM) to present “Bridge Abutment Analysis and Design Example: Evaluation through Construction.”

Christopher G. Naida, PE teamed with Christopher Johnecheck, PE, (MDOT) to present “Increased LRFD Axial Resistance Factors for Piling Using Static Load Test and PDA.”

Melinda L. Bacon, PE presented “Rock Engineering: I-196 WB Bridge over the Grand River, Grand Rapids MI.”
