Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc. (SME) recently teamed with 13 communities/coalitions in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio to secure U.S. EPA Brownfields Redevelopment Grants totaling $5,685,000 for support of redevelopment projects. To date, SME has successfully acquired over $25,000,000 in federal brownfields funding for Midwest communities. SME’s success rate for acquiring federal brownfields funding is over 85%!

SME also secured a $1,000,000 Revolving Loan Fund Grant for the State of Michigan Landbank Fast Track Authority.
Within the last year using brownfield incentives, SME has helped numerous Midwest communities transform blighted brownfields into productive sites in our new economy. For example, SME is helping:
- Ventower Industries, LLC transform an industrial landfill into a new wind tower manufacturing plant;
- Toda America, Inc. redevelop a brownfield site into a high-tech battery component plant; and
- Michigan Motion Picture Studios, LLC and Unity Studios repurpose two large idled automotive facilities into film production facilities.
SME helps governmental agencies, communities, owners and brownfield developers across the Midwest, turn blight into bright. SME and its staff have secured over $90,000,000 in state/federal grants, loans, tax credits, and tax increment financing for municipal and private brownfield redevelopment projects valued at over $900,000,000. SME assists communities by providing grant management and attracting development by designing creative funding programs using multiple, leveraged brownfield financing methods to offset environmental and infrastructure costs.
SME’s integrated brownfield redevelopment approach for communities and developers includes environmental due diligence, constructability evaluations and planning, environmental exposure mitigation planning and implementation, environmental cleanup design/management, geotechnical and pavement engineering to address site conditions and constructability issues, and quality control testing and environmental management during construction. At sites where building rehabilitation is involved, SME also helps owners/developers reduce uncertainty and costs by providing hazardous materials assessments, abatement design and monitoring; building condition assessments; energy efficiency studies; and programs for building restoration and renewal.
