Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of David W. Bird, PE as Principal Consultant to our geotechnical team in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dave has over 35 years of geotechnical engineering experience and specializes in helping owners and design/build teams with geotechnical/geo-structural engineering and design, as well as value engineering for earth retention systems, high capacity drilled shaft and pile foundations, slope stability analysis, and remedial correction of slope failures, dams, embankments, and levees. He also practices in forensic engineering and provides expert witness services for a broad range of construction related litigation. He is responsible for senior technical consulting/project management and helping clients throughout the Midwest resolve geotechnical/design issues associated with development and redevelopment projects.

Dave recently provided geo-structural engineering/consulting and design, including structural design and bidding document preparation for over 25 structure foundations for a nearly four-mile-long connection between the new Unit 2 Station at the existing Louisville Gas & Electric Trimble County Generating Station and a Duke Power 345 kV transmission line located in Clark County, Indiana. A challenging aspect of the project included supporting a mile-long transmission line  connection over the Ohio River that needed to be over 400 feet above the river level. Support for this span takes into account 40 feet of sag in the line from summer usage and clearance above vessels on the river.

At the new multi-purpose Lucas Oil Stadium and Indiana Convention Center Expansion in downtown Indianapolis, Dave helped the project team with geotechnical engineering and analysis, and provided construction engineering services for the temporary support of the structural steel during the erection of the moveable roof. During construction of the 1.2-million square foot Midfield Terminal for the Indianapolis International Airport, Dave provided on-site construction engineering and consulting to assist the project team with the installation of challenging drilled shaft foundations used to support the structure. He has also consulted on the geotechnical design of Segment 3 of the I-69 extension in southwestern Indiana.

Dave is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in ten states, including Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin. He holds a master of science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois and a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont.
