SME offers full-service, state-of-the-art, in-house laboratories for testing aggregate, soil and a wide range of building materials and products. From routine tests to specialized analyses, our laboratories provide the data needed to evaluate your issues and design solutions to meet your project goals and objectives.

Every day, our skilled laboratory technicians conduct a comprehensive range of tests on aggregate, soil, asphalt, concrete, masonry, coatings and many other building materials and products. Unlike other engineering firms that offer smaller labs or must outsource much of their testing, our state-of-the-art facilities offer the breadth and the technology to handle your testing requirements without delaying your project’s timeline.

Beyond routine tests, our facilities are equipped for forensic and failure analysis studies of manufacturing equipment, metals, elastomers, coatings and other building materials. We also offer other specialized testing methods that deliver critical insight into the performance of construction and building materials and how they impact your project. The experts on the SME Construction Materials, Building Materials, Pavements and Geotechnical Teams work hand-in-hand with our laboratory technicians to recommend tests and carefully evaluate the results.

Our extensive experience and knowledge enables us to leverage test data to solve problems quickly and thoroughly and ultimately deliver solutions that enhance overall quality and performance of your project while saving you time and money.

SME participates in Round Robin certification testing sponsored by the Association of Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL). Test equipment is calibrated to NIST standards, and procedures utilized are in compliance with ASTM and associated governing agencies. We participate in a Round Robin testing program for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in bituminous materials. Our lab is also certified by the Corps of Engineers; American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for soil, aggregate, Portland cement concrete, hot mix asphalt and metals testing; and by several state DOTs.
