SME ADDS TALENT TO PAVEMENT TEAM

SME has added two experienced pavement engineers to our growing Facilities and Infrastructure team. Senior Consultant Kirt M. Andersen, PE and Senior Project Engineer Keith D. Toro, PE bring a wealth of civil engineering knowledge to the team. SME’s Facilities and Infrastructure Services Group is a unique collaboration between our building materials, pavements, and steel, coatings and nondestructive testing experts to creatively help our clients extend the lifecycle of their valuable assets.

Andersen has 25 years of civil engineering experience that began as a Construction Surveyor for the US Army Reserve while he was pursuing his BS degree in Civil Engineering from Lawrence Technological University. His expertise includes design of preliminary site planning to final detailed engineering and construction plans of infrastructure to support project development. Andersen supervises, conducts and reviews design evaluations, and implements management systems. He formulates evaluation plans and prepares schematic designs and budgets. Andersen is known for providing professional engineering services in relation to site civil design, permitting and land entitlement. He has experience working with the local, county and state agencies including the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). His engineering and development experience includes projects for a wide variety of client sectors including: power and energy, higher education, industrial and commercial, land development, manufacturing, residential, and transportation.

Toro is rejoining SME after beginning his career here as part of our Co-op Program and working his way up to Senior Project Engineer and Project Manager. He has 27 years of civil engineering experience with a demonstrated ability to meet stringent project requirements. His experience includes consulting related to pavement, structural materials, nondestructive testing, and building system components. Toro’s expertise is in materials evaluation testing, with an emphasis on soils, pavement, concrete, and foundations. He assesses and makes recommendations for roadways, airport runways, tunnels, foundations, buildings, and other structures. He also provides customized design and consulting for new and rehabilitated asphalt and concrete pavement. Toro is responsible for providing project management including technical, administrative, and budgetary oversight of multiple projects. He obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Lawrence Technological University, where he also served as an Adjunct Professor for 12 years. He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Michigan and Ohio, as well as a Licensed Residential Builder in Michigan.
