Jimmy John's Field Earns ACEC Engineering Excellence Award

The American Council of Engineering Companies Michigan Chapter (ACEC/M) has awarded its most prestigious honor, the Engineering Eminent Conceptor Award, to Jimmy John’s Field.

The ACEC/M Awards Program recognized outstanding efforts of professional design firms to meet clients’ needs through exceptional projects, and offers the opportunity to showcase the year’s best engineering and surveying achievements to industry partners at all levels.

For decades, stakeholders could not overcome the real and perceived challenges of redeveloping the property that is now Jimmy John’s Field. Developing on an unregulated landfill meant unpredictable hurdles and extraordinary cost. The site included roughly 15 to 30 feet of buried waste and a 26,000-cubic yard pile of construction debris from a failed prior development. SME and the entire project team collaborated to design creative solutions to overcome significant environmental and geotechnical settlement challenges.

The transformation of this site into the $15 million minor league baseball stadium marks the largest redevelopment project the City of Utica has ever seen. It has spurred revitalization of the downtown business district, creating a destination where families gather, businesses thrive, and the community can enjoy its treasured natural resources along the Clinton River.

General Sports and Entertainment, Frank Rewold and Son, Inc., the City of Utica, Macomb County and other local supporters worked together to bring this project to life. With help from the City, Macomb County, State of Michigan, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the team secured $3 million in funding to address a host of environmental response measures and constructability issues associated with the former landfill.

“This team worked hard to deliver a project that not only addressed decades of neglect, but will enrich the community for generations to come.” said SME President and CEO Mark K. Kramer, PE. “SME is pleased to have collaborated with such a distinguished team, and honored that the team and project were recognized with this prestigious award.”
