Employee Spotlight: Scott Roosa

Passionate People Building and Revitalizing Our World. This is who we are. SME's Employee Spotlights provide a glimpse into the passions that drive our team members to build a better world.

Why did you choose this profession?
Anybody else get excited when they see a crane? I do. Always have. It took me a while to find a path for a career, but once I found out civil engineers get to hang around cool project sites with cranes of all shapes and sizes, I knew I had found my path in life. I quickly found that some of the biggest and coolest cranes show up on heavy civil transportation sites, so I’ve spent most of my career working on heavy transportation projects.

What projects are you most proud of?
Some of the largest transportation projects tend to be design-build projects, and I’ve been fortunate to be a part of some of the largest and most challenging design-build projects that the states that I practice in (Michigan and Indiana) have ever contracted.

How do you recharge after a long week?
When I’m not working and spending quality time with the kiddos, I LOVE to smoke meat. I found that I can multi-task on the weekend and produce some quality food in the process!

What are you passionate about right now?
I have enjoyed sports for most of my life. As life has progressed, I’ve spent less time playing and more time coaching my kids. The more I coach, the more I find that I enjoy coaching as much, if not more than I enjoyed playing! Watching and helping kids progress and learn to be a good teammate is incredibly rewarding, and I’ve loved every (sometimes challenging) minute of it.
