Innovation is often associated with new technology, but at SME it means much more. True innovation comes from applying people, processes, and technology in smarter ways to solve challenges, improve outcomes, and deliver greater value for our clients and teams.
At SME, innovation does not have to be revolutionary to be effective. The most impactful improvements are often small changes that make work safer, faster, easier, or more consistent. Whether driven by technology, processes, people, or a combination of all three, innovation is about applying existing tools and expertise in smarter ways to solve real challenges. Our focus is simple: small is big. Incremental improvements, made consistently over time, often deliver greater long-term value than a single breakthrough idea. By striving for continuous improvement and encouraging innovation at every level, we create meaningful changes that drive better outcomes for our clients, colleagues, and communities.
Some of SME’s most valuable innovations come from the people doing the work every day. Team members in the field, laboratories, and offices often have the best insight into where processes can be improved and how challenges can be solved more effectively. Creating opportunities to share ideas and feedback is essential to building a culture of innovation.
A strong example is the evolution of the Drilling Group’s Daily Field Log-to-unit-billing workflow. For decades, the field log completion and unit billing process was a simple but effective pen and paper task. But after years of tediously transcribing handwriting, losing paper, and forgetting to bill certain units, we searched for a better way. What started as handwritten notes in a field book, then became a simple Word document. This then evolved into an interactive data collection, dashboarding, and streamlined unit billing workflow through ongoing feedback, refinement, and training. Its success was not driven by technology alone, but by engaging users throughout the process and delivering a solution that addressed real needs and added value.
Technology plays an important role in innovation, but its greatest value comes from enhancing human expertise and not replacing it. At SME, we focus on using the right tools to solve real challenges. Team demonstrated this by developing a process using AI to consolidate project information from multiple sources. This use of technology improved efficiency and sped up decision-making, but professional judgment remains the key to turning information into actionable solutions.
Innovation also requires discipline. Not every idea should become an enterprise-wide initiative, which is why SME uses pilot programs to evaluate solutions, gather feedback, and measure results before broader implementation. Every pilot program provides valuable insight, whether it leads to wider adoption or reveals a better path forward. The goal is not simply to launch new technology, but to identify solutions that solve real problems and create lasting value.
A successful pilot program is only the beginning. Sustainable innovation requires scaling effective solutions across the organization through leadership support, cross-functional collaboration, user engagement, and measurable results. When these elements align, innovations can move beyond a single team and deliver lasting value across the entire company.
Innovation is most effective when it supports business goals, improves client service, and strengthens operational performance. By measuring outcomes such as efficiency gains, time savings, adoption rates, and data quality improvements, SME can ensure innovation efforts remain focused on delivering meaningful and lasting value.
Innovation at SME is not about chasing technology for technology’s sake. It is about empowering people, solving problems more effectively, and continually improving the way we work. By combining team member expertise, thoughtful use of technology, disciplined experimentation, and a commitment to continuous improvement, we turn ideas into meaningful results. In the end, the most successful innovations are not always the biggest or most disruptive, but the ones that create lasting value for our team members, clients, and communities.
