SME provided professional surveying services for DTE Energy at the INEOS Pigments Plant 1 and Plant 2 South sites. DTE selected SME based on a long-standing relationship and our proven ability to deliver full-scope surveying solutions for complex industrial projects. The site posed unique challenges due to a dense network of overhead and underground utilities, which required thoughtful planning for new utility routing. SME worked closely with the design team to support this effort by integrating data from traditional surveying methods, 3D laser scanning, aerial mapping via drone, and subsurface utility locating.

SME prepared a boundary survey of the parcels, marked record boundaries in the field, and developed six legal descriptions and exhibit maps for two proposed lease areas and four easements. A topographic survey was completed using conventional methods, locating visible surface features and utilities across the site. To enhance design accuracy, SME also performed high-definition 3D scanning across key areas to generate a detailed model capturing drainage structures, utility lines, railroad tracks, and elevation data. This 3D data was combined with conventional topographic information to create a comprehensive site map.
SME conducted a planimetric survey of approximately 80 acres, which assisted with easement writing and helped ensure safety near the adjoining railroad infrastructure. Drone-captured aerial photography was used to map the project area and document proposed improvements along easement routes, while also minimizing on-site traffic in restricted zones. In partnership with GPRS, SME provided ground penetrating radar (GPR) services to identify and confirm subsurface utility locations throughout the site.

By combining traditional and advanced surveying techniques, SME helped the design team overcome access and safety constraints while keeping the project on schedule. Our work laid the groundwork for the next phase of the project, while supporting DTE and the development team through successful execution.
