SME began its investigation in 2022, funded by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission’s U.S. EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant. Given the sites history as an auto-salvage junkyard, extensive testing and remediation were required to make it safe for future residents.
To address site concerns, SME conducted a Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA), and developed a targeted sampling strategy that included soil and gas sampling to assess contamination and vapor intrusion (VI) risks, and a geophysical assessment, identifying multiple underground storage tanks (USTs) that posed geotechnical stability concerns.
Our Geotechnical team worked closely with our Environmental team, as these groups are experienced in coordinating investigative work and remedial activities, thereby reducing costs. SME performed 23 borings, DCP tests, and multiple lab tests to evaluate the subgrade conditions.
SME provided materials testing and observation for subgrade preparation, engineered fill, and utilities backfill – providing critical quality assurance during construction, helping materials and workmanship meet project specifications and industry standards.
SME offers a comprehensive multi-service approach that can minimize delays, avoid consultant conflicts, and streamline communication. SME’s engineers collaborate across disciplines and offices to minimize costs and maximize efficiency.
